What is this Wiggly Creature?

Did you know that centipedes may have anywhere from 15 to 177 legs. A centipede can live anywhere near dirt.  Read on for more information.

Appearance
Centipedes have long segmented bodies. They are mostly brown. They have many legs they can grow up to 2.5cm. You can find them in dirt and grassy areas. They are very slow so they are easy to find.

Diet
A centipede’s diet is spiders, white tails and other arthropods. A Centipede’s mouth has little fangs that comes out of their mouth and wraps around the food and tugs it in to eat.
Protection
A centipede’s protection is curling up in a ball to protect itself from prey. When the prey is gone it quickly moves away before the prey comes back.

This interesting insect can be found in Frankley School Bush, New Plymouth.  They are a useful part of our environment though and keep it clean and green.
